Jazz It Up!, Bexley Music Parents’ annual fundraiser held on April 30 at Capital University, was a great success, raising much-needed dollars to support Bexley’s K-12 music programs. Guests were treated to performances by Bexley middle and high school jazz musicians and as well as the music of the Dave Powers Trio.
Karen and Jim Pierce were honored with the Friends of Bexley Music Award. The Pierces served Bexley Music Parents in many ways, from helping organize and run the Outdoor Concert picnic, to chaperoning trips, selling fundraising items and planning the first several Jazz It Up! events.
Bexley Student Representative Elise Skaggs, a 2009 graduate, shared her reflections on the benefits of her Bexley music education. A gifted string player and vocalist, she participated in both the orchestra and vocal music programs. She went on study at Miami University where she earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in both music and strategic communication. Last year, she received her master’s degree from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in both viola performance and string pedagogy.
Jazz It Up! was made possible through the hard work of many parent volunteers, including event chair Brigid Arace and committee members: Pam Calhoun, Donna Hecker, Sally Dunn, Kim Keiser, Matt Copp, Suzanne Marilley, Charles Cihon, Dave Lauerhaus, Susan Rhoads, and Laura Martin.
